Possess the Land

THE CONTEXT of MINISTRY EXPANSION at SMOKEY POINT

Not that long ago, all that existed at the corner of 172nd and Smokey Point Blvd. was Van's Tavern, 7-Eleven, a seasonal fruit stand, and a vacant lot people used to sell old cars.  No McDonald's, Safeway, Starbucks, or the dozens of other buildings now in this neighborhood.

Early in the development of what has now become a bustling off-ramp, Smokey Point Community Church grew from a congregation of a few hundred to over 1400.  But for several years now, we've continued to bump into that ceiling of capacity.

Our desire is to bring the gospel to more people in this area where tens of thousands of people do not know and treasure Jesus. We want them to understand and embrace the gospel, celebrate the supremacy of Jesus Christ, and go share that love with others, leading them into a growing relationship with Him. One significant barrier to us being able to do this is our limited facility capacity. During key ministry times, parking lots are full, rooms are full, and space for growth is severely limited. Solutions for long-term significant growth are limited on our current site.

After working with a professional third-party church-consulting group, and considering several options to overcome this barrier, we prayerfully considered what God would have us do, and in 2004 we purchased 37 acres of land for future ministry expansion. The vision and commitment to move forward with the plans for ministry expansion with this property is called POSSESS THE LAND.

POSSIBILITIES

Imagine thousands of lives transformed by the gospel. A neighbor, a co-worker, a family member, a friend...

Imagine a church aggressively loving the community so much the community would miss us if we weren't here...

Imagine a welcoming facility where there is a place for all who come...

Imagine space to grow dynamic ministries to people from varying backgrounds...

CHALLENGES

Sunday morning services are at capacity, especially our second service when most guests attend.

With over 600 people in Life Groups, many of them use our campus during the week as meeting space. This is especially true of the young families that make up the largest demographic of our community. They meet on campus for provided childcare. Regrettably, on nights when childcare is available, we don't have any more rooms to meet in.

During the week, our Facility Maintenance Team makes frequent room configuration changes for the large number of activities that occur throughout the week.

Creative schedule changes to a number of programs are made to maximize the use of space.

While a number of great proposals, opportunities and ideas for reaching our community with the gospel exist, we've had to indefinitely postpone some of these plans for lack of space and resources.
