Simple youth ministry

Posted by nathan in MinistryGeneral

So often youth pastors are hounded to have the next big event. We are told that students need and respond to glitz and glamor, that to reach them it must be new... Many youth groups clamor after events that are flashy and cost approximately the same as the gross national budget of a small european country. I must admit, I am not completely immune to this disease, and we do have many crazy and "unique" events here at SPCC. But I am always surprised when November comes around, and we do one of our most consistently mass attended events; Christian ice skating nite at Lynnwood Ice Center. JHers flock to this event. It is sooo simple, there are no big bands or crazy mixers, just JHers spending time together skating (or at least trying to) in circles. This is something I did as a JHer and loved, and something I think that even Byron did. :0) Time and generations will not change that fact that JHers are about relationships. And that effective outreach and ministry are not necessarily best accomplished by money and flash. Instead, spending time together and actually "reaching out". What a great reminder for me. Sometimes ministry is simple.

Nathan,
I agree relational ministry is where it is at with youth especially. Hanging out together and having a conversation or doing something together with an individual student or small group goes much deeper and has great value to them. Much more so than the "big event". Thanks for your investment in many students in this way and especially my son Ben. It means alot to him and also to me as a parent.

Keep up the good work at SPCC with those Jr highers.
Bronco
