This past weekend, Tim talked in the message about how a proper understanding of the wrath of God is necessary for an appropriate understanding of the love of God. Today was a heavy day. I received two emails today with bad news from friends of ours who are expecting children.

One wife is about 26 weeks along and they found out their daughter-to-be has an ovarian cyst. They can be fatal and depending on the growth (or lack therof) there are no real optimistic treatments.

Another wife lost her baby at about 18 weeks--just two weeks behind my own wife. She, her husband and daughter are in shock and grieving deeply.

I am currently typing this blog while sitting in the waiting room of a San Jose Hospital trauma intensive care unit. I have just come out from seeing my brother, who because of a severe motorcycle accident, up until a few hours ago was balancing between life and death... We are now being encouraged by the doctors that Jordan looks like he is through the worst and continues to become more stable. Sorry for the long delay in getting to this third section of our discussion on pain and God’s sovereignty. As I said, I was away in the Philippines for three weeks and am just now getting back up to speed. Well, “speed” may not be the most accurate term. But, lets say I’m getting started again and with a new set of responsibilities and schedules in my new role on staff here at church...

Cancer Encouragement

As I read through the prayer list today I couldn't help but notice all the requests related to cancer...

A little over a year ago, I ran accross an article that was really helpful for me in dealing not only with cancer (that of my mom) but also other areas of pain and trial in my life. You can read it in this article entitled "Don't Waste Your Cancer" by John Piper, pastor and cancer survivor. -Bryan

Let me heartily echo Aaron's statement regarding the importance of knowing what scripture meant to its original readers. The questions raised by pain and what God is in control of are really part of a larger issue of theology referred to as God's sovereignty or providence. There are differing doctrinal positions on this issue. Most of you will have strong feelings one way or another as we talk about these things. Personally, I am not very interested in discussing doctrine based upon what we think or feel. Rather, I would like us to respond to what God's Word has to say on the topic.
