A time for self-discipline (part 2)

I mentioned in my last blog about the physical joys of self-discipline. And how I was seeing the connection between how I treat my physical body and holiness... 1 Tim. 4:7-9 talks about how physical training has benefit, but that training in godliness has eternal reward. I have come across some verses that tie those two things together. I am finding that you can not separate the two from each other. In our compartmental, North American views of life we like to separate our [...]

Faith ALONE in context: Get Catholic first.

I read a short chapter from Preaching the Cross last night. In it, one of the authors (R.C. Sproul) talks about the misunderstanding we have of the idea that faith alone saves us. It is an important misunderstanding to be mindful of, especially in our convenient American Christianity. Sproul points out in this chapter that the theological concept of "faith alone" has its roots in the Reformation of the 15oo's. Martin Luther and others were responding to the Roman Catholic ide [...]

Wow, I have been feeling really good lately. I am about a month into a very consistent exercise routine... I am averaging 5 work outs a week with some weeks getting six in. I hit the weights Mon, Wed, and Fri. Tue, Thurs, and Sat, I have a group cycling class that kicks my butt. Tim Quick and Austin McFadden love to point out and laugh at the fact that there are only two guys in the cycle class; but I don’t care.

Back in High School I wa [...]

Spooky Politics -- Video

I am taking a bit of a risk here in puting this video up. So other than the disclaimer that is on the top of my blog (click on my name on the left of the page to see it), here is another one. I am not siding with any particular party or even a particular position on the war. What I am doing is pointing out that the logic that Ginrich is using, even if only half right, has merits. And if he is only half right, isn't it odd (as a friend of mine pointed out) that congress and the American p [...]

What a prank! (video)

This one is definitely on the lighter side from my recent posts. Sometimes it is good to simply watch something astounding...even if it is trivial.

Watch video of public prank involving over 200 people.

Pressing in Through Painful News

Today was a heavy day. I received two emails today with bad news from friends of ours who are expecting children.

One wife is about 26 weeks along and they found out their daughter-to-be has an ovarian cyst. They can be fatal and depending on the growth (or lack therof) there are no real optimistic treatments.

Another wife lost her baby at about 18 weeks--just two weeks behind my own wife. She, her husband and daughter are in shock and grieving deeply.

These kinds of [...]

Giving Stats for 2007

I've spent some time this week getting ready for the annual meeting this weekend. In doing so, there are some interesting statistics that lead me to want to say thank you to almost two hundred homes.

There are a little over 1500 households in our church. And 10% of them (about 170) gave 70% of last year's general fund budget. My stats don't tell me who you are, but I am thankful to God for your partnership in our vision to see people in this community and around [...]

We just finished cleaning up after the Philippines Documentary that Paul Waggoner and his team put together. Wow. God is awesome. You'll be able to get a DVD if you missed it or if you want to watch it again. Look for a sign-up sheet at the Event Center in the Lobby. Here are just a couple of things that struck me...

1. How matter-of-fact it was for them the leave everything to spread the gospel. It truly is good news to the people of the Philippine [...]
